The Music Industry in Practice
This course introduces students to the structures, functions, and creative processes driving the modern global music business. Through practical
examples, lectures, and case studies, students will explore the economic, legal, and promotional systems that underpin artist careers, from recording and publishing to live performance, marketing, and management.
The course examines income streams, copyright, licensing, royalties, contract negotiation, collaboration, content management, and music marketing, while analysing the interrelationships between labels, publishers, managers, distributors, promoters, and live-sector professionals.
Emphasis is placed on developing a practical understanding of how artists create and protect value in a rapidly evolving music ecosystem, alongside building the skills to produce a professional Electronic Press Kit.
Who it's for, tuition fee, applications, prerequisites, and credits
The course is for those who want to understand the structure and interconnections of the global and local music industrys and design a personal or group business plan aligned with individual career goals in the music industry.
A matriculation examination (stúdentspróf) or equivalent education is required, e.g. from Bifröst University's Háskólagátt (University Gateway).
The course provides 5 ECTS credits at the undergraduate level.
The course is also a part of a micro-credential/degree in Music Business
Format
The course is taught as periodic distance learning. Instruction begins on January 4, 2027 and runs until February 4, 2027.
