Centre for Regional and Municipality Studies

The Centre for Regional and Municipality Studies was established in early 2023 following an agreement with the Ministry of Infrastructure, with the aim of strengthening academic and applied research in this field. The Ministry may request that the Centre undertake projects that fall within the scope of the agreement. Otherwise, research priorities are determined in consultation with the Centre’s advisory committee.

The Centre’s role is to promote positive regional development and strengthen local government in Iceland through targeted research that contributes to objective, informed discussion and supports better policymaking and decision-making. Its areas of research include residential choices, living conditions and regional development in Iceland, as well as the role and operation of local government and the Icelandic labour and property markets.

Professor Vífill Karlsson leads the Centre’s research activities. The Centre’s team also includes Dr Gréta Bergrún Jóhannesdóttir, Specialist, and Stefán V. Kalmansson, Project Manager.
