Call for Papers: Security and Europe’s Peripheral Regions
Magnús Skjöld, Professor at Bifröst University, is one of the editors of a new Research Topic in the international peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Political Science. The Research Topic is entitled Peripheral Frontiers: Security, Vulnerability, and Geopolitical Agency at Europe’s Edges and forms part of Magnús Skjöld’s Jean Monnet Chair research project.
The call invites submissions to a Research Topic that builds on ongoing research into Europe’s peripheral regions, where security threats, geopolitical tensions, and strategic challenges are often felt first and most acutely. These regions include, among others, the Arctic and the North Atlantic, the Black Sea region, the Western Balkans, and other areas at the margins of European security and foreign policy.
Submissions are particularly encouraged from scholars and practitioners working on small states, hybrid threats, infrastructure security, differentiated integration, alliance politics, and related themes.
The Research Topic is aimed at academics as well as policy experts and practitioners working in the fields of international relations, political science, security studies, and European affairs.
Submission deadlines:
Abstracts: 5 May 2026
Final papers: 23 August 2026
Further information about the Research Topic, its thematic focus, and submission guidelines can be found on the journal’s website.
