The role of the counselor is to provide support and information for the students about their studies, ways to study and work ethics. Further to provide psychological advice on issues that might be affecting their studies, such as anxiety, sadness or sociological challenges. Finally the counselor will assist the students in finding their way with choosing suitable graduate studies and/or professional careers to complement their skills and interests.
The goals of the counseling are threefold:
1. The overall wellbeing and comfort of the student in the school and in his/hers studies.
2. Optimal academic results.
3. Optimal parity between the individual and his/hers choice of study/vocation.
The main goals are that students feel at ease, are successful and are on the right path in life. The role of the counselor is to support and help the students in achieving them.
Fundamental concepts: self-knowledge and responsibility
In the counseling the concepts self-knowledge and responsibility are key.
The counselor seeks to support the students on the path to self-knowledge and intuition of his/hers strengths and weaknesses, promoting self-help and responsibility. The counseling is meant to be guiding and supportive not suggestive or directive. The same applies here as in other aspects, your life is what you make it but the counselor is here to help you find your way.
How does the counseling take place?
The counseling is based for the most part on interviews where the counselor and the student seek to jointly map the problem at hand. Its extent and roots in addition to looking at and working with possible solutions. Furthermore career interests are assessed with the help of various acknowledged tests such as the Strong® Interest Inventory.
