The Faculty of Social Sciences offers a 180 ECTS interdisciplinary BA programme in international studies. The programme may be completed in two to three years, depending on the ability and the wishes of the student. Students typically complete 78 credis per year, but can proceed more slowly, and in certain cases more quickly, as outstanding students have the chance to work on summer projects which can shorten their course of study to two years. Admission requirements are the matriculatioin examination.
Students start with basic courses in politics, philosophy and methodology, and then move on to more specialized courses within the field of international studies. Special attention is given to security and conflict resolution, globalization, the role of international organizations and development studies. In addition to core coures and electives, students complete independent group projects (term projects), work with a faculty member in discussion sessions (the tutor system), and complete a 12 credits BA thesis.
The programme stresses the importance of analysing international issues from different perspectives, providing students with tools from different disciplines within the social sciences. Frequent short assignments and close relationships to teachers and other students distinguish the programme, and give it an added practical value. The programme provides access to further studies at the master's or doctoral level which depend, however, on the requirements of individual schools regarding minimum credits in each subject, minimum grades and so forth.
Instruction begins each September and classes are on-site at Bifröst. The principal language of instruction is Icelandic, although some courses, especially summer courses taught by visiting instructors, are given in English.
