Students can also study business at Bifröst University via distance learning but is only available in Icelandic. This gives those who aren’t able to leave their jobs or move house the opportunity to receive a B.S. degree in business from Bifröst.
What’s special about distance learning is that students can, for the most part, organize their time in whatever way they like. Lectures are accessible on the university web site and students can download them at their own convenience.
Students take three to four classes per term, totalling 20 to 26 ECTS credits. This allows them to complete their degree in four years. They take the same courses as on-site students, mostly from the same instructors. It is possible to switch and become an on-site student part way through the program. Distance learning students at Bifröst follow the same system of homework assignments and project work as on-site students do, so the quality of the program is the same.
Program organization
The program is designed for students who are working at the same time, and proceeds at half the speed of on-site students. Each class is worth 4 to 8 ECTS credits, takes on average 4 to 6 weeks, and ends with an examination or final project.
Assignments are completed online and are a mixture of individual and group or pair assignments. The assignments can take anywhere from a few hours up to several weeks to complete, depending on their scope and circumstances. Students can watch lectures whenever and wherever they want and as often as they want, and are able to print out the materials they receive.
Students can communicate with each other and with their instructor through the online course management system.
Three to four times a term, students meet for “working weekends” at Bifröst, which begin on Friday afternoons and finish on Saturday afternoons. These working weekends are used for lectures, work on assignments, and communication training. It is very important for students to attend working weekends and to take full part in the presentations, critical discussions, and other activities.
Registered students are given a password which gives them access to the Bifröst course management system. There they can download particular course materials, lectures, assignments, and other password-protected material. Bifröst University always aims to use the best and most efficient technology available to present course materials and encourage communication between students, their classmates, and their instructors.
Applicants to the B.S. program in business must have completed their Icelandic university matriculation examination (stúdentspróf) or a similar level of education, for example from the Bifröst University preparatory department.
